Running up to Saturdays match against Annerley was important to me, the Team and Justin Ansell.
For the last three years in the Premier, I had never won a game after the mid year break, the team opted to have a well deserved break and Justin, well congratulation on becoming a father. To make it all more interesting Annerley was gifted 3 point due to Brisbane Athletic playing an illegible player moving them above us on the table.
With Justin's omission, we shuffled the team around to build a strong backbone with Glen and Damien in the back, Ian and Luke in the middle and striking with Danny and Jason Poggi. While this was complimented with speed and flare (read Kevin) wide on the left and right.
We took control early, with majority of the possession and slowly working towards our first goal in the 27th minute by Luke McKenna, the only downside we fall victim to conceding a few minute later. The team wasn't happy conceding the quick goal, and with a precise corner by Lewis Dent, Glen Andrews finds the net and we go 2:1 up in the 34th minute. This time we quickly earn possession and keep the ball long enough to take the sting out of Annerley's attack.
We where keen to finish the game as soon as possible, everyone raised to the challenge. Unfortunately Danny Flaskas injures himself and requires medical attention and is substituted in the 57th minute with Jimmy Meiklejohn. The team maintains its strength and through Luke McKenna we score in the 66th minute bringing our total to 3 goals. The core of our ability in front of goals was Jason Poggi, who played his first full game and in the dying minutes he proves to much for Annerley's defence and is brought down in the penalty area. Jason as a true gentleman gives the shot to fellow Senior player Kevin Crawford (in bright orange boots), Kevin the birthday boy converts on the second attempt and the final score 4:1 was deservingly by the team.
Special mention to the travelling supporters and special thanks to Tony Dooley who spent heaps of time organising a bus load of supporters for the team. The supporters could be heard far and wide singing happy birthday to Kevin and were instrumental in selecting Kevin as the penalty taker.
My three year Voodoo is broken, the Team showed the break was deserved and can back up with a win. Congratulations.
Big Canale Cup game against Power on Wednesday, 23rd @ 7:30pm, the Team will be happy to see you there
