Match report: ACE 2 vs Newmarket 1
This was the first match in the second half of the 2010 Brisbane Premier League Division 2 season. In our last encounter with Newmarket we were comprehensively beaten 3 Nil. This game was identified as a must win game and the team started strong, building on our current form.
The midfield was picking every wayward pass made by Newmarket and quickly moving into attack via the wide players. The ball regularly found its way into the Newmarket penalty area. From one such ball, a penalty was awarded to Ian McKenzie after being tackled illegally in the penalty area . But it was not to be as Justin Ansell placed the ball above the cross bar. From this point Newmarket became menacing and in the 30th or so minute took the lead through Barry Wilkinson.
This was not a new position for the team to be in, and as experience has shown we quickly gathered our focus and from a clean corner kick by Lewis Dent and Ian McKenzie (who was unmarked) slotted a textbook header, to bring the scores level just before half time.
The second half of the game was frustrating as we had most of the possession and attack with the ball, making Newmarket work and their keeper work overtime. At times it looked like we were going to suffer an agonising draw, and not due to a lack off effort and creativity. Esse on several times throughout the game tested the keeper with lofted balls right under the cross bar, one such ball on the 73rd minute was to much for the keeper and the winning goal was scored.
Congratulation to the team and special mention to the defence for the solid performance. Also would like to congratulate Jimmy Meiklejohn and Chris Allgood on their performance with the Reserves.
